Stone County, Railey Creek Bridge

  • Great River Engineering was selected to provide engineering services for the construction of a bridge over Railey Creek in Stone County.
  • The existing structure was a narrow low water crossing that was frequently flooded.
  • The approach roadway to the low water crossing was sloped and when vehicles would cross the low water crossing would leave water on the road.
  • During the winter months, this water would freeze on the roadway and several cars would be stranded.
  • This low water crossing was replaced with a single span bridge and elevated approaches.
  • The new bridge will provide for safe passage of vehicles and allow for the roadway to open to traffic during more frequent flooding stages.
  • The bridge is a 22-foot wide, allowing for two-way traffic.
  • The bridge will be 70-foot long with single span. The most economical structure type was a steel I-girder.
  • This will help keep the fill material to a minimum, therefore requiring minimal right-of-way acquisition.
  • This bridge was also placed on a new alignment to improve the roadway alignment and allow for traffic to continue to pass through the area during construction.
